Rather than inching toward a "Semantic Web" whereby some ostensibly (questionably) neutral software "interprets" the meaning of on-line content, we seem to be moving rapidly towards user-defined interpretations, as mediated by powerful, proprietary search engines, whose parameters are continually adjusted by completely non-transparent algorithms, through the process of "bubble" filtering:

Which, through the beauty of tracking software, generates feedback loops, whereby content is individually adjusted to satisfy the insatiable appetites of readers who need further confirmation of their interpretations, necessitated by their cognitive dissonance when reality (with its liberal bias) fails to meet expectations. Following which, Dunning-Kruger sets in with a fury.

Not that this hasn't always been so, but we've achieved new levels of automation and efficiency in spreading ignorance and delusion with each new advance of technology. Perhaps this explains how a modern industrial empire continues to operate when at least half of the voting population and its elected leadership are either delusional, ignorant, or both, and that's being generous. Now, that's what I call Exceptionalism!

“When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean - neither more nor less.”
